We do not just train & run! Spectrum Striders also organise several social events during the year.
Each year, club members & their guests gather to present the Club Championship trophies to the winners and to present the Club Road Race Standards certificates. There is also a "Christmas" Dinner and disco. In recent years, this has been held in early January as it is much cheaper and there are more dates available.
We usually have a "pub quiz" each year. This has been held in various venues in recent years, including local pubs and restaurants. There is usually a buffet during the evening.
We used to have a summer Family Track Day at Victoria Park track where we had races at various distances, long jump, also fun races and relays. All members of the family were welcome and it was usually followed by a BBQ.
The last Track Day took place in 2012. Support for the Track Day has been poor in recent years and it has not been held, so it is uncertain whether there will be any future Track Days.
This race takes place on a summer evening over paths in Birchwood Forest Park. In recent years it has been on a Tuesday evening when the track is unavailable for our track training.
This is always on the Friday evening preceding the Birchwood 10k race. It gives members the opportunity to do an informal race on the 10k weekend and we usually go for a pint afterwards. Brian Burnett has organised most of the duathlons.
We go for a monthly curry, usually on the first Thursday of the month after Club training.
There are also other events during the year which are not Striders club events but which many Striders enjoy.
Some Striders go on an informal training camp in the spring, mid to end of March. The aim is eat and drink and run as much or as little as you want. The week is run in conjunction with friends from West Cheshire AC, Deestriders and several other clubs around the UK.
If you want to know more, ask any of the following: Julian Spencer, Andy Garnett, Linda and John Owen.
Each November (usually on the same weekend as the Preston 10 mile race), Julian Spencer organises a Fell Training weekend in the Lake District. Many Striders plus members from other running clubs come along.
Running is not compulsory; some people go hill walking instead. The venue is usually the Newlands Adventure Centre near Keswick.
