During 2002, we became aware at the club of a number of new computer viruses. Previously, they had not been of any great concern to us. The difference with the new viruses was that they became extremely widespread very rapidly and began to infect several unprotected computers belonging to people at the club. One of the consequences of a computer becoming infected in this way is that the virus attempts to infect other computers by sending copies of itself to every email address that it can find.
UNLESS YOU HAVE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE ON YOUR PC THAT IS BEING REGULARLY UPDATED, PLEASE OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING:
DO NOT CONTACT ANYONE AT THE CLUB BY EMAIL.
DO NOT SAVE EMAIL ADDRESSES OF CLUB MEMBERS IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK.
IF YOU ARE A CLUB MEMBER, DO NOT JOIN THE CLUB EMAIL LIST.
DELETE ANY MESSAGES THAT INCLUDE EMAIL ADDRESSES OF CLUB MEMBERS ANYWHERE IN THE CIRCULATION LIST.

The only way that you can ensure that your PC is protected is to have anti-virus software installed that is updated regularly. This is the case whether you are operating your own PC from home or using a company PC at work. If you are using a work PC, your IT Department will be able to advise you about the virus software that is being used and how often it is updated.
For home PC users, the most common products appear to be those of Norton (Symantec) and MacAfee, although there are other brands available. You can buy the products from many retail outlets including computer specialists and office stationery stores, or by downloading. They come with a year's free subscription that allows you to update your software regularly. Subscriptions are then renewable annually for a small fee.
There are also several excellent free products, including AVG Free and Avast.
There is no other option for protecting your pc. If your PC becomes infected, there are removal tools available on-line that can help to clean your PC, but they do not guarantee complete success and cannot protect you from future infections.
