Christmas Fancy Dress Run, 16th Dec 2001

What a morning! 16 Striders slowly gathered together in Car Park 4 of the Birchwood Centre dressed in a variety of outlandish costumes. The weather was kind this year, it was dry and (relatively) warm – which is just as well as we laughed and joked about each other's outfits and took lots of photographs.
Once again we had as many spectators as runners. Their excuses for not running would make entertaining reading….but at least it meant that we had plenty of finish recorders.
With all the posing complete, we all raced around the 5K circuit, half in one direction, half in the opposite one (all trying to convince ourselves that it was for fun - and not a competitive race...). Bits of costume were dropping off or floating away en-route. On meeting our allotted partners, each team exchanged a Christmas cracker, turned around and proceeded to run, stagger, crawl or limp back (dependent on the costume).
Once again the costumes were excellent. We had seen some characters before: Harry Potter, catwoman and a workman, but this year we had an array of ‘costume jokes’, with Kenny as ‘it looks like Rain dear’, Sue as ‘A Lot of Hot Air’, Dave as ‘Under the Sea, me as the Milk Tray man - with bandaged injuries and Dave Redpath as ‘Not so Fast Food’. Most dramatic transformation was Eric – who, worryingly, showed what miracles make-up could achieve.
Once again we retired to the Silver Birch for a buffet and the presentation. Eric was unanimously voted the best fancy dress and we all relaxed after another enjoyable event and action-packed Spectrum Striders year.
