Intro to Fell & Trail running 27-May

This is now fully booked.

Fell & Trail Running Day 27-May-2012

We (Spectrum Striders) are helping host another "Introduction to Fell running" session at Delamere Forest on Sunday 27th May.  It will be FREE and will run from 10 am to 4pm.

You will learn what kit you need, you will learn how to run down steep hills; you will learn about sports nutrition for the runner.  To use up any spare energy we will take a few ability based groups for a run in Delamere as the last session. We hope to include some navigation and other skill sessions in the morning.

We expect have 40 to 60 taking part and we hope that 20 of those runners will be from Spectrum Striders.  This is your chance to try off road running.  We will have some of the regular fell (and trail) runners going too as we want to improve but we hope to share our enthusiasm for off road running with a greater portion of the Club.

The lead coach is Jackie Newton, supported by a Sports nutritionist, Richard Othen.  Tea and coffee will be provided free, but please bring your own lunch.  The course is based from ’The Classroom’ behind Delamere Forest Visitors Centre, Linmere, CW8 2JD.  There willl be no car parking charge for attendees to the course.

There have been two courses like this already.  The Macclesfield session with 40 people was superb which is why we have volunteered to help host this day.  So please, all you road runners, come and try it.  The key training session will be coached running downhill running on steep (and easy) gradients.

Programme

Here is the draft schedule:

  • 09.30 – Meet at Delamere Lecture Room near Delamere Forest Linmere Visitor Centre, CW8 2JD.
  • 10.00 – Introduction.  Plans for day.  Discover range of abilities and expectations of attendees.
  • 10.15 – Kit discussions.  Workshop / discussion to share knowledge and experience - experts and novices.  Trail running / fell / cross country.
  • 11.00 – Alternative workshops, aimed at 3 ability groups:
    • Novices – Differences between road, trail and fell running.  Training and competitive events.
    • Intermediate / Expert – specialist off-road training (already run on trail & fell)
    • Road Running – off-road training for road runners
  • Practical sessions.  We aim to run several sessions, but until we confirm the number of coaches available, the exact times and number of sessions will vary.  We know from past experience that with 30-40 people, we need to split up into groups.  We are looking to do:
    • Ascending – strategies on extreme hills
    • Navigation – using a couple of control points of Delamere Orienteering Course.  Striders may be able to provide experienced navigators to help.
    • Descending – basic and advanced techniques
    • A road running session – Pace judgement / intervals on the trail / team relays around a circuit?
  • 13.00 – 13.40 – Lunch break  (please bring your own lunch)
  • 13.40 – 14.30 – Talk: Nutrition for Endurance Athletes
  • 14.40 – 15.45 – Run in Delamere Forest.  Split into different ability groups. Trail / off-road or road.
  • 16.00 – Feedback session.
  • 16.30 – Close
