If you want to run a 10k personal best, then this is the race for you.  It attracts runners from all over the north west of England and is run over relatively flat roads and paths around Birchwood.  The Birchwood 10k has been run every year since 1984 and just gets better with age!

This race has been ranked in the top 100 UK road races by Runner's World Magazine.  The race boasts one of the most extensive prize lists that you will find, with over £2000 given away each year in prizes!

All finishers receive the legendary 10k luxury bath towel – much more useful than a medal!  The race is commentated on by Pete Pinnington who will be playing music and taking requests through out the day.

Runners are welcome to raise money for the charity of their choice at our race.  Our nominated charity this year is Prostate Cancer UK.

Specialist running retailer Sweatshop will have a stall at the event where discounted running shoes and clothing can be purchased in addition to getting some advice on running shoes and other running equipment & clothing.

Why not throw down a challenge to one of your local business rivals, neighbours or friends?  Well you can do that when you enter a Corporate Challenge team of 4 in the Bichwood 10k.

Race route

The race route is an accurately measured 10k along roads and tarmac footpaths in Birchwood and Croft.

The route has changed for 2014 between miles 1 and 3 to avoid busy roads.  This part will now be mostly on tarmac footpaths with some road sections.

To see a map of the route, please click on the small "Birchwood 10k - race route" map on the right of this page.

Birchwood 10k nominated charity

Runners are welcome to raise money for the charity of their choice at our race.

Our nominated charity this year is Prostate Cancer UK.

Prostate Cancer UK

Prostate Cancer UK charityProstate Cancer UK is proud to be the beneficiary charity of the 2013 Birchwood 10k and is looking forward to raising awareness and funds to fight prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK.  Every year in the UK 40,000 men are diagnosed with the disease and 250,000 men are living with it.

We are the leading UK charity for men with prostate cancer and prostate problems.  We fight to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life.

We have 3 priorities:

  1. Supporting men and providing information
  2. Finding answers by funding research
  3. Leading change to raise awareness and improve care

How can I get involved?

You can help!  Join our 10,000 Challenge and raise £100 for our work.

10,000 men die every year from prostate cancer.  We are asking you to raise £100 which is 10,000 pennies to help change this stat.

Run in the Birchwood 10k on behalf of Prostate Cancer and we will send you our fundraising pack and one of our running tops.

Race results are usually available to view at Race HQ after the prize presentation.  We aim to have provisional results available to view on this web site on the evening of the race.

Race HQ

Race HQ is in Spencer House, adjacent to the Birchwood Shopping Centre and will be open on race day from approximately 8:30am.  Spencer House is close to Car Park 4, which is at the railway station end of the Shopping Centre.

The Race Venue address and a link to a location map are on the left side of this page.

We are unable to offer facilities to store bags or valuables.

The prize giving will be held at Race HQ.  This is normally at about 12:30pm.

Chip timing

We use chip timing for the 10k race.  You run over a timing mat at the start and at the finish, and this records your time.

Apart from prize winners, times will not be available immediately after the race but will be available on this web site within a few days of the race (hopefully on race day).

Positioning of the chipPlease read the instructions carefully for placement of your timing chip.  The chips used are designed to be attached to your running shoe laces.  They will not register your time if worn elsewhere, for example on the arm.

10k Race Information Sheet

We send a race information sheet out with your chip & race number.  If you lose it or want another copy, it is available for download in PDF format.  Please click here.

Fun Run

As part of the Birchwood 10k Road Race event, we also organise a Fun Run, along a traffic-free course mostly on paths in Birchwood Forest Park close to the Birchwood Shopping Centre.  The Fun Run is ideal for beginners and for family members of runners in the main 10k race.  If you have young children, you can jog with them around the course, a great way to warm up gently for the 10k.

The route is about 1 mile (2k). The route is measured by GPS so the distance is approximate.

You can pre-enter the Fun Run using the Birchwood 10k Entry Form, or you can enter on the day.

Corporate Team Challenge

[Full details of Birchwood 10k Corporate Team Challenge race entry are on our How to enter web page.]

We include a Corporate Team Challenge event within the 10k race.  It is open to teams of 4 runners from the same company and working at the same site, or groups of 4 friends & family in a "Friends & Family" team.

Teams must include at least one veteran (a man aged 40+ or a woman aged 35+) and at least one woman.  A veteran woman in your team can meet both of these requirements.

There are three classifications:

  • small (fewer than 500 employees)
  • large (500+ employees)
  • friends & family

Note that Club runners are eligible to count both for their Club team and for a Corporate Challenge team.

Vendors & Sports Massage

The Birchwood Shopping Centre is open on race day.  Many of the stores in the Centre will be open.

Staff from the Hyde branch of Sweatshop will be in attendance on the day, adjacent to Race HQ.   Sweatshop are a national chain of specialist running shops.

A team of Sports Masseurs, mostly from Salford University, will provide pre- & post-race massage in a marquee between the car park and race finish.  Two sports injury specialists from Sports Rehab UK (Mike Carolan & Allan Munro) will be available, checking any sports injuries & leading the team.  The massage is free but a donation to our charity Brainwave in lieu of a fee is requested.

Post-race showers will be available at the Birchwood Leisure & Tennis Complex (on the opposite side of the Shopping Centre from Race HQ).  They will charge £2 to use this facility.
