National Fell Relays Saturday 19th October 2002, organised by Ambleside AC in the Langdale valley from Wall End farm.

For 2002 the National Fell Relays return to the Lake District and to the delightful Langdale Valley.  Ambleside AC shifted the relays to the Saturday (the traditional fell racing day) so that a post race party could be held at the nearby Stickle Barn, on the the evening after the race.  Two routes (leg 1 and leg 4) went up and down Pike O'Blisco,  leg 2 ventured Eest onto Lingmoor, while the navigation leg ventured onto the smaller hilltops in between.

Men's team selection this year was much less stressful as all the volunteers and reserves were available, fit and keen to go (except for our esteemed Fell coach, who did apologise profusely but he had to work on Saturday morning).    The ladies team caused me the stress instead!  In the end we managed a 3 woman team made up of one Strider (Alison Grime) and two ladies from Helsby Running Club (Jackie Keasley & Carole McCarthy), as the latter were also a little short of colleagues to make up a team.  It is refreshing that fell running is relaxed enough (i.e. not run  by people obsessed by rules) to allow a 3-person mixed-Club team to take part and enjoy the challange.  Next year we will do better and field a full ladies team provided the venue is not too far away to enter.

Results this year were not quote as good as expected, especially for the A-team as they were behind the B-team until leg 4.   The A-team suffered from a sprained ankle on leg 1, a sprained ankle for one runner on leg 2, and the "navigators" getting  lost for a while on leg 3.   Fortunately for A-team pride the last leg runner for the B-team runner was lead of course by following other runners in front  and consequently lost so much time as he had to go back down the hill to find the right route.

Race report from Mark:

The awful overnight weather made Amanda and myself think twice about turning up for this race, but we decided to go and hope that the weather was better in Accrington than at home. Once we got there, and got into the spirit of things, we put on our wets and ran it anyway. The 80mph northerly winds hadn't died down, although the torrential rain had slowed to a steady drizzle. Being a hilly course and considering the weather I hadn't hoped for a seasonal best, but I at least wanted to achieve sub 55mins. Amanda really wanted to achieve sub 50, but with the weather I think we both wanted to 'just get round' as they say.

The start was on Bolton Road with approx. 200 plus runners, of which there were 3 Striders. The first part of the race, mainly down hill was not so bad apart from exposed sections to the wind. Amanda sped away from about half a mile into the race and as usual I didn't see her again. My time at the 3 mile marker was just 24:30, so I felt good at that point until I saw the 2 mile hill in front. This was the killer. The wind caught me twice and brought me to a halt, literally because of the force head on and it being an ascent. I really hated that part and wish I'd stayed in bed. I have never had wind before physically stop me from forward motion.

After a left turn and change of direction, from 5 miles, the course was fast with a tail wind and I ran much faster. I managed my usual sprint finish in a time of 56:12 showing I mustn't have tried hard early enough.

The race was won by Neil Tattersall 32:00 (Pendle AC) and Anne Powell 38:42 (Leigh Harriers), and the Striders results were, in finishing order, Bill Mansley 51:13, Amanda Smith 51:33 and myself Mark Smith 56:12. Not quite achieving my sub 55mins, but the weather was harsh. Looking forward to some sunshine for the Wesham 10k in November.....
