USA masters track and field championships
Eugene, OR, USA, Thu 7th - Sun 10th August 2003.

Tony Bell and Shelley Walsh competed in these championships. They took place at the famous Hayward Field track of the University of Oregon.

Trafford Track Meet
Longford Park, Manchester, Tue 12th August 2003

Julian reports:-

Two Striders ventured down to the Open meeting at Longford Park in Manchester, it is halfway between Stretford and Chorlton. Dave Carrington usually with Dave Southern is a regular attendee at these meetings that take place every 2 weeks in the summer. Julian was sent there by his coach (Brian Burnett) to practice running 3000m in race conditions as preparation for his goal of running under 5 minutes for the mile.

The atmosphere was really very relaxed and friendly. There were 200 to 300 competitors there and of all ages. With kids and vets competing together. It is all decided informally on ability. The 3k was split into 2 groups of 20, those who could run under 9minutes 25seconds for the distance and then the rest. If there are more they do a "C" race as well. The "A" race was at 6:30, with the "B" at about 6:45, so we had finished by 7pm and could watch a few other races while we waited for the results. Conditions were excellent as it cooled down and there was no wind to speak of.

I found the first lap a bit fast but then I was on Dave Carrington's shoulder for 200m. After clocking 76 seconds for lap one I thought I had better slow down for the next few laps. In the end I did the 3 separate kilometres in 3:15, 3:23 and 3:20 which gave me a time of 9:58.85 seconds which was a PB by 12 or 13 seconds. I would like to go back and take a few more of you. It was a good experience. You can stop and do another race if you want. Dave Carrington was happy with his time given that he has not raced on the track and been away for a few weeks on holiday since the Spectrum Track meeting.
