Bala Triathlon (swim 1.5km, cycle 39k, run 10.25k)
Sunday 19th September 2004

454 Karon Forster   2:55:45     18th lady vet of 28.

536 finishers, a further 17 did not finish.  Full results and more event information are available at http://www.ukresults.net/04sep.html#bala.

This event was Karon Forster's first open water triathlon and she did the event in aid of charity - for more details, see below.  Here is a report from Karon.

I did complete the triathlon, though I needed all the motivation I could 'grasp' to run the 10k with cramp. The weather was a bit cold and windy and Lake Bala on the choppy side (I shipped a bit of water), the combination having some effect on one's circulation. I think the lactic became 'fixed' during the bike. The results probably tell the tale: swim 34.39 (331 position) bike 1-18.57 (402nd) 1-02.09 (512th) total 2-55.45.

There was some fantastic support on the day, not least from marshalls and the bemused locals.

Many thanks to all of you who have already paid pledges. Due to family commitments I unfortunately (for me anyway!) cannot attend the Club sessions (or indeed run much) at the moment. However, I will be down at the Club on on Thursday (7th Oct) at the start of the session to thank those of you there in person and to collect pledges from any of you there.

If you live in Warrington you may have read about baby Abigail Tinkley from Orford who is struggling in Alder Hey Hospital, and the campaign to raise funds for life-extending treatment only available in America. If you want more information, there are two articles from the Warrington Guardian - article 1 and article 2.  Thanks to some great generosity, Abbie's Fund will now be around £700 better off, approx £200 of that raised from Spectrum Striders and other friends and acquaintances from the running 'world'. Abbie's fundraisers had raised £20 000 up to last week.

Spectrum track mile trial.
Thursday 28th September 2004

Thanks to all of you guys who helped me with my personal training to break the 5-minute mile barrier, especially Matt Burnett for the 1200m rehearsal last Sunday and for Tony McCarthy for the plan and the pep talks. This is the first time I have ever stuck strictly to a focused plan and it clearly paid off.
