Who knows what the teams were?  It was fun (and dramatic thanks to Julian’s tumble!)

This, was our seventeenth annual track meeting – and the sixth since we moved from Padgate to Victoria Park.  We didn’t have searing sunshine, but it was pleasantly warm and dry.  We were slow to get going, people just kept turning up – eventually!  It was good to have a few guests from Helsby RC and Warrington AC….but the star of the day turned out to be still at school….

Julian dominated the events – winning the first three and coming second in the 3k.  However, he was well beaten into sixth place in the Long Jump, where Olivia White, Eleanor Morris’s 15 year old schoolfriend, gave us all a lesson in style and performance in the event.  A real treat to the many spectators.  We also had lots of children entertaining us between races, running: jumping and their own skipping and egg and spoon events.  Jasmine Jones, Caroline and Nick Jones recent addition seemed unperturbed by the excitement – but then she was just a week old!

So, once again, a brilliant day.  Special thanks to Tony Bell, Jennie Duncan, Janet Redpath and Helen Gillard for doing the timekeeping and position recording.

We rounded it off by retiring to Julian’s to enjoy  his superb barbecue.  As usual it was noticeable that many more people were there than had been at the track!!  The sun broke out and his garden was filled with lots of smiling Striders and friends!

Hope to see you all again next year!

Burtonwood 5mile race & fun run
The first running of the Burtonwood 5 mile race was very successful. The
fun run clearly caught the imagination of many in Burtonwood village with
at least half a dozen in fancy dress and a whole cub pack running round
together, although their cub leader clearly did not want to run herself.
The two biggest problems at the race was that the cubs all wore their
numbers on their backs as "leader" thought their neckerchiefs would obscure
the race number and then they all decided to run across the line together
as a pack causing real problems from the time recorders! Everyone squeezed
into the pub after as it started to drizzle soon after we finished the fun
run. Nick Jones, Caroline Jones's hubby won in a very respectable time of
25:15, so he ran each mile in 5:03, which is quicker than your
correspondent's 1 mile time at the Spectrum track meeting on the previous
Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the race I had several disparaging remarks from some Striders
about offering a free beefburger for the runners after the race. I concede
that beefburgers are not everyone's first choice meal but loads of the
runners seemed to enjoy the free burger afterwards, and those that did not
just did not bother and maybe had a beer instead. The race was a little
stressful for me and the other organisers as we only had 15 adults enter
in advance but this went up to 54 on the day. I have not been to a race
with more fun runners (i.e. 64) than in the main race runners. We had a
lot a of positive comments from the runners who did attend, "a good flat
course", "good parking and pub", "shame we did not have more notice so we
could bring more runners". I particularly wish to thank personal friends
at Macclesfield Harriers and Warrington AC for bringing down a gaggle of
runners. In the end they Rugby League Club have made a profit and not the
loss that I feared at one stage. They are keen to run the event again in
2006. They provided effectively all the marshals apart from one important
junctions where I wanted to put an experienced race marshal. The
commitment from our Club was primarily my time to help them put on the
event, with help from 3 other Striders and two Striders spouses. Your Club
committee have directly criticised me for involving the Club in "yet
another" event. They are worried that we are already doing too much and
are over-committing ourselves. It should be noted that I have
deliberately tried to teach the Burtonwood Bridge group what to do so that
they can take the lead next year. I believe, however that this race with
only minimal input from Spectrum Striders (primarily time from me, Julian)
can be another good, local race which we can take advantage of. It is a
long time now since there was a local 5 mile race. I would personally
appreciate some feedback from more of you on this.
